Guide to WADA Prohibited List
Hormone & Metabolic Modulators
There are five different categories hormone and metabolic modulators can be put into: aromatase inhibitors, selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERMS), anti estrogenic substances, agents modifying myostatin functions and metabolic modulators. In general they slow down testosterone from turning into oestrogen.
Aromatase Inhibitors, SERMS and Anti Estrogenic Substances
These substances are normally used for treatments of different types of cancer from breast to hormone dependant tumors. Certain names that they are called includes anastrozle, raloxifene and fulvestrant. Athletes take these drugs due to their abilities to suppress the side effects of anabolic agents such as gynecomastia. The side effects of using these drugs include cardiac problems, breathing difficulties, dizziness, joint pain and osteoporosis among others.
Agents Modifying Myostatin Functions
These drugs are also be known as myozap. There have been no human clinical trials to look at these drugs, the only research comes from animal research. The claim is that they are stronger than steroids by increasing muscle strength and size with less work and a decrease in body fat. Due to the lack of research there has not been any side effects noted for humans, however in animal studies it has been found to result in infertility and increased chance of injury.
Metabolic Modulators
Metabolic modulators are commonly known as insulin. This drug is normally used to regulate blood sugar levels in insulin dependant diabetes patients. The reason for using it in sport is due to the stimulating effect it has on energy and protein synthesis. The side effects of this drug are numerous and include sweating, hunger, dizziness, cold sweats, rapid heart rate, mood swings, blurry vision, anxiety and in extreme cases coma. If you are an insulin dependant diabetic and need insulin to function you need to complete a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) form. These can be accessed by contacting your national governing body or going onto the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) website.
